What is LED Light Therapy?
LED Light Therapy is a skincare treatment administering different wavelengths of light including red, blue and near infrared.
Did you know?
That LED twas originally developed by NASA for plant growth experiments? It was later found to have applications in wound treatment, bone and muscles loss.
Researchers found that specific wavelengths of light had different effects on the cells of the body. When used in combination, those wavelengths could produce powerful results in a skincare regimen.
It was found to be of great value in its use for skin regeneration, reducing skin inflammation, combating acne breakouts and for general wellbeing.
Which skin conditions can LED help?
There are several skin conditions that LED light therapy can help. Research suggests that with regular use of LED light therapy, conditions such as acne, inflammation and skin ageing can all be improved with regular treatment.
At Sensoria we have found that used in conjunction with other modalities and skincare products a wider range of skin conditions can benefit too.
This includes dry skin, dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and redness.
Why did we introduce LED at Sensoria
I personally became interested in LED Light Therapy as a facial treatment, when I visited a medispa for a skin treatment as an industry expert mystery shopper.
Having suffered with outbreaks of rosacea since starting the menopause, the redness on my nose and left cheek was becoming a problem requiring me to disguise it with concealer most days.
Following LED blue light in the skin treatment my skin looked much calmer, less red and less irritated and the effect lasted several days.
Since having that treatment, I spent time researching the different devices on the market to see which one would be the most beneficial for our clients.
I settled on the Celluma Light Therapy unit in the knowledge that it was not only FDA approved, but also FDA cleared.
After using this unit for sometime, other equipment came onto the market and since then we have invested in another LED unit which we find equally as good.
Is LED safe?
I am always advising to protect skin against light to prevent premature ageing. So it may sound strange that I am recommending bright LED light as a skin care treatment!
As LED light therapy does not contain ultraviolet rays (as sunlight and daylight do), this means it is not at all harmful for the skin and is safe for regular use. In fact, regular use is essential to see the long term benefits of this treatment.
How often should I have LED Light Therapy?
Even a one-off treatment will give your skin a boost and an instant glow by ‘supercharging’ your facial treatment. You can take it as a treatment on its own or combine it with a Dermalogica skin treatment.
The LED treatment I had at the medispa gave me a calmer, less red and less irritated skin for almost a week, but for best results we recommend a course of 6-8 treatments. These should ideally be administered twice a week, but once a week is also acceptable. I have invested in a mask to use at home so that I can access LED several times a week. If you would like a recommendation on which one to buy, please get in touch.
Light energy mask
We often combine LED with a special Dermalogica Light Energy Masque. This unique formulation allows us to gain additional benefits from the LED treatment when combined with red light.
It helps to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and improve hydration.
The perfect ‘non-invasive’ anti-ageing treatment
We carry out lots of anti-ageing treatments at Sensoria, but not all of them are suitable for everyone due to medical history or lifestyle demands.
Depending on your medical health, skin type, skin condition and personal preference, the non-invasive and relaxing attributes of LED Light Therapy can be the perfect alternative.
There is no skin piercing, no discomfort, no ‘down time’ and no aftercare to worry about. The whole process is relaxing, pleasant and effective.
We have found it particularly good for the following types of clients:
- metal plates or pins in the face and neck region contra-indicating any electrical current.
- clients who cannot tolerate any discomfort with their anti-ageing treatments
- It suits clients who want a natural approach to their treatments
- Sensitive skins that don’t react well to too much disturbance or physical contact.
Previously the above category of clients had no where to turn to too, but LED can offer an effective alternative to the more ‘active’ treatments.
What’s the difference between blue and red LED light?
The colour of the light will be selected according to your skin condition.
Blue light has a wavelength of 415nm and targets bacteria which cause acne breakouts. This reduces inflammation and helps to treat mild to moderate acne.
Red light has longer wavelengths and is used for skin regeneration as it stimulates collagen production It is good for skin ageing and wound healing, amongst other things.
Why does the light pulse?
Pulsing adds a higher level of effectiveness to the device.
Clinical literature has shown that light energy which is pulsed enhances the cell’s ability to absorb more energy over the treatment time.
Static light is not as effective, but is also offered as an option if the client can’t tolerate the pulsing light.
However, goggles are supplied and the pulsing is rarely noticed.
Should the skin be exfoliated before LED?
Generally speaking, the old dead skin cells should be removed before treatment to ensure that the skin is able to get maximum benefit from the LED.
The amount and type of exfoliation will depend on the skins sensitivity and any active breakouts.
Very sensitive skins or skin with active breakouts may not always be exfoliated.
In most treatments the skin is double cleansed (the cornerstone of good skin care) and exfoliated before any further treatments are applied, whether it is LED or other treatment modalities.
